Friday 25th March 2011: Evaluation

Evaluation

What have you learnt from you Audience Feedback?

I aimed my Questionnaires at 14-21 year olds, because I am in this age group. I understood their thoughts and related to what their views and opinions were on local papers. From the audience feedback I received, I learnt that teenagers didn't think enough news was provided for their age groups in their Local Paper. Because I used facebook to distribute my questionnaires, I had friends from other areas of the country that gave their opinions on their local papers. Therefore I wasn't just asking youths from my own area, that would give an opinion on the one local newspaper that we all know. My front page story, and the story featured in my 2nd page, was of a Teenager, who had made a success. Looking at the questionnaires, a lot of the teens asked thought success was featured a lot in their paper, therefore I considered it a Code and used that, with a story of a Teenager. I did this because It takes both themes found from the Questionnaires and makes it suitable for the teens asked. Although the specific audience was Teens, the Target Audience was to attract all local people in a local community, therefore I featured a sport sub-headline, talking about the Local Football League.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning, and evaluation stages?

The main use of new media technology used in my Portfolio was the blog. I used blogger.com to show all of my research, embedding YouTube videos for my Radio advertisement research, Uploading examples of Local newspapers and newspaper posters to find the codes and conventions for my own product, and scanning and uploading my sketches of Layouts for my print products. This also comes in to the planning section, as for each of my print, I had to create mock ups of how I wanted my newspaper/poster to look. The main use of new technology was using Facebook for my Questionnaires. I mailed the questions to a group of people, from different areas and of different ages in the 14-21 group, asking them to complete it and send it back to me. Facebook was a real advantage to me as without it, I would have had to print off my Questionnaires and handed them out, which could have caused a lot of disadvantages, as some may not have been given back to me, some people may not have bothered to fill it in, etc. Facebook however, is used everyday by teenagers and is convenient for them to quickly fill out and send back. For the construction, I used Publisher for my product creation, as I think this was the most appropriate program for a Newspaper, as I could make Layouts, include columns and texts, etc. I also used Publisher for my Newspaper poster, for the same reasons. I edited my radio advertisement using Adobe Premier. Instead of just using audio and adding it into my blog, I added in a title explaining what the audio was and who it was done by. I then used YouTube to Upload the 'video' and embedded it into my blog, along with the practice/Mock ups, etc. Lastly, I used Twitter and Tumblr to advertise my final products, linking it up to my blog so my followers could comment on what their thoughts of the products were, and if they found them effective.

In what ways does your media product use, develop and challenge forms and conventions of read media products?

Throughout my research and production of my products, I looked at the codes and conventions of Newspaper Front Pages, Articles and Posters. The main element I looked at was the layout of each of the three, how the article was set out, where the Photographs were places, if advertisement's were featured on the page. I looked at two front page covers, then looked at two article pages, all featuring different stories. This led me to draw out three of my own mock ups of the newspaper front page, second page and poster using the bases of the layouts I have looked at and choosing the one I think was most suitable for my design.

I think I developed my work from the examples I looked at by really emphasizing on the Local Theme of my newspaper. Some of the examples I looked at featured national news, along side the local, whereas I wanted the part of the newspaper I was designing to be strictly local.

The fact that my questionnaires told me that teenagers didn't think enough news was featured in Local Papers for their age group was how I challenged the newspapers I looked at. I wanted to use the research I found and report something that was relevant to the people asked. This is why the story of the Teenager being successful was relevant. The story emphasized how she was the first to achieve what she achieved (getting into a 'Top London Drama School') in the local area. I made sure this was clear throughout my report and front page, by featuring the story as the Main headline. I also think because my local newspaper was 'new', a positive story on the cover would attract the right audience.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

To combine all of my products together, I needed to create a 'Brand'. I did this by including a similar style to each of the products. For example, I used the Masthead on the Front page on the Poster to advertise my newspaper, So it was familiar to my audience. I think it was important to create a similar 'vibe' throughout all of my products, that being a positive, fresh and successful theme, using positive stories, advertising them on my posters and on my radio advertisement's, with positive, upbeat music. I also tried to keep a similar style throughout my print work, using the same fonts for my Headlines, Sub-headlines and articles. I Also used the same newspaper caption throughout all of work, so Audiences will remember it as the newspapers line. Overall, I think I achieved my aim of creating a 'Brand' for the local newspaper.

Front Page Analysis

Looking at my Front page of my newspapers, You can see that I have tried to stick with the codes and conventions of a Newspaper Cover.

  • Layout is classic of a newspaper. I have included a sub-headline above the main story/headline, that is of a different section of the newspaper, to show the variety of news featured in the paper.

  • The masthead is important as it is the 'brand' logo for the newspaper. People will see it and immediately know it is that newspaper. I used this on my poster also, with the emblem in the middle, representing the newspaper. I kept it simple, therefore the headline, which is different, stands out.

  • Beneath the masthead I featured the date/price and caption of the newspaper, which was 'Your Local Source for Local News'. I really tried to emphasize the local theme, strictly only including local type news on my front cover.

  • My Byline features a picture of the reporter that has written the main story. I did this because I think it includes an element of National Newspapers in it.

  • The Main headline features a sub-headline beneath it, going into more detail on the story, with lines, sectioning it all off.

  • In the bottom left hand corner, I featured an advertisement of a local business. I think this again, Emphasizes on the local element. It shows support of local business and is something positive, which is something I wanted portraying in my Newspaper, as I have said previously.

  • The main story is split into columns, a essential code to newspaper layouts.

Second Newspaper Analysis

I took elements of the newspaper I analysed and research to help me create my second page of the newspaper.

  • Again, the date and caption of the newspaper is featured at the top, which I have included a line beneath, to split the page up.

  • 'Main Local News' is written above the headline, to show the section of the newspaper. If, for example, I were to do a Sport section, that would be done also, with 'Sports' above the headline.

  • Again, I have featured the headline, with a sub-headline beneath. Underneath the Sub-headline, I included “Continued from front page”. I think this is important to include, and it shows the relation to the front page story.

  • I have featured two colour pictures, on the left and right. These are to illustrate the story. They relate to the story as the building is the school that the local girl Roxanne attends, and the other is Roxanne and her drama partner rehearsing. Beneath both pictures I have written a sentence describing the picture above.

  • I have included the newspaper website at the end of the article, as this expands my newspaper to other medias, if it was real.

  • Beneath the story, I have again featured a advertisement for a local business. This, I have made in line with the picture, so it all fits into the layout correctly.

  • The byline again, features a picture of the author beneath it.

Poster Analysis

My poster was kept quite simple, like the posters I looked and analysed and researched. I didn't want my own to look too busy, and I wanted audience to be able to quickly read it in passing.

  • My poster is split into four sections; Masthead (which is the same as on the newspaper cover, for 'branding'), Newspaper Caption, The time of the newspaper, and what is featured in it, with the price.

  • The second section down is plain black serif writing, with a white background, so it is the first thing the audience sees.

  • The third and fourth section each has a black background, to establish the difference between the second to the fourth.

  • In the fourth section, I have featured the main highlights from each section of my paper. Including main headline (which is the story on the cover of my newspaper), Sports, (which is included on my front page), A local story, and a competition. I have chosen these particular headlines because they are not 'breaking news'. They could be included in any day of the week.

  • I have featured a yellow burst stating the price of the newspaper. I have done this so it stands out to the audience. At first, I had red, black and white writing, along with the yellow burst. I didn't think the colours looked good together, therefore I took out the red to make the yellow burst stand out more, and so they fit a better colour scheme.

Radio Advertisement Analysis

My Radio advertisement for the local newspaper consisted of a voice over music talking about the paper, what is included, the price, etc.

  • The voice over is happy, upbeat, and attractive to the audience I am aiming for. It goes well with my choice of background music.

  • The background is also energetic, upbeat and fast-paced.

  • The advertisement is approximately 30 seconds. This was appropriate for my work as I wanted it to be simple, so audiences were able to remember it.

  • I used the newspaper caption “Your Local Source for Local News” at the end of my advertisement, as I notices that this was a code for most advertisements on the radio. I also used it throughout the rest of my products.

  • I included the headlines that are featured in my newspaper. I also included the price of the newspaper, to attract the audience more, as the content of the newspaper will attract them into buying it.

  • Again, I emphasized the Local theme of the newspaper, Including in the scripting only local stories, nothing national.

  • I asked my voice-over to emphasize some of the words in the scripting so they would stand out to a listening audience.

Friday 11th March 2011: Scripting for my Newspaper advertisement.

Scripting

After looking at the possible ways of going about my Radio Advertisement, I have thought about what my advert will say, and have considered the people to say it for me. On that part, I have concluded, that I am going to get a drama student who will be clear and confident enough to speak out and will be able to emphasize on the areas I want to stand out to the audience. I have decided that my advertisement will not have as much information on it as the previous I have looked at, (therefore it won't be aslong) so it will be approximately 30Seconds long.

Script#1

"Local Girl Accepted into Top London School! Local Team moves up in League! Local Areas new Councilman! All your Local News featured in tomorrows big issue of The Daily Journal! Find out about new local businesses, local government news, special offers, and advertisements for products near you! Get it all for just £1 in The Daily Journal. Your Local Source for Local News!"

Here I have picked out key areas the are the most important for the advertisement, and used the newspaper caption as the last thing that is said, therefore audiences will remember the advert and automatically associate it with the newspaper.

Script #2

"The Daily Journal is your number one source for local news. Whether you want to here the latest success story, the safest neighborhoods in the town, or new business ventures, its all featured in The Daily Journal. For just one pound, sports, headlines, advertisements, and much more are featured everyday. The Daily Journal, Your Local Source for Local News"

Like Script #1, I have highlighted the areas where I think the words need emphasizing, to keep those key areas in the audiences minds.

Script #3

"The only newspaper that focuses on just local news is The Daily Journal. At The Daily Journal, we promise to deliver local, relevant, and important news right to your doorstep, for just one pound! Buy the Daily Journal in all local newsagents, The Daily Journal; Your Local Source, for Local News"

I think this piece really emphasizes the local theme of the newspaper. Again, I have highlighted important words that the speaker should emphasize on.

Choice

I have decided to go with Script 1. I think it gives alot of detail towards the newspaper, even including recent headlines, and different areas of the newspaper. I will be including music in the background, like shown in the advertisements I have previously looked at. It will be quite an energetic advertisement, with enthusiasm and upbeat music.

Monday 7th March 2011: British Radio Advertisement

My previous analysis' for my Radio advertisements have all been American, and that was what was most available to me. I think it is relevant for my to look at a British radio advertisement as that is the accent that will be used in my advertisement, and more importantly, the local newspaper I have created is British.

  • Man at the beginning talking nonsense (seems almost like a stereotypical news reader voice), that seems irrelevant to the radio subject. This is done so the Audience remember the advertisement, therefore it means that they remember the company the advertisement was for. The voice is formal, straight and straight to the point.
  • The second voice is more relaxed, informal and reassuring.
  • Second voice is emphasizing words like "Financial" to get his point accross.
  • Like the previous advertisements I have looked at, the important details like the phone number, website, etc, are said at the end, so it is the last thing the audience remembers.
  • As well as the details, the advertisement (like the previous) also uses the company caption at the very end of the advert.
  • There is no sound in the background of the advert, so the mens voice are clear to the Audience.

  • This advert was featured on local radio stations around the area of Alton Towers.
  • The background sounds are appropriate to the theme of the advertisement, the theme/genre being Horror/Scary.
  • First of all, there is a man who plays out as if he has been to the event being advertised.
  • The mans voice then fades out and another mans voice comes into the advert and explains the event. Fairground type music is played in the background.
  • The Advert explains the dates of the event, then advertises the hotel as well.
  • Lastly, the caption for the theme park being advertised is used,so audiences remember, and the sponsor for the park is said, so there is an association between the two.

Friday 4th March 2011: A Look At Radio Advertisements.

Audio Work & A Look at Radio Advertisments

My next task is to create a radio advertisement for my Local Newspaper. It was difficult for me to find a source that had local newspaper advertisements. Although, I did find a number of radio advertisement examples on YouTube. Here are some that I have looked at and analyzed to find out the codes and conventions of radio advertisement, and to give a clear look on how mine will sound...

  • Background music seems almost sympathetic at the beginning, but then develops into a 'happy tone' of music, being appropriate to the subject matter.
  • The tone of the mans voice is understanding, as if he is on the side of the audience. He is emphasizing some of the words he uses, pointing out key words, like 'Honest' and 'Responsible' . This could transfer over to my newspaper advertisement by emphasizing words that could attract the audience to the paper.
  • Creating a personal affect for the listeners. Trying to hit home as to what he is saying, as if he is saying "we know how you feel, we understand", which would also relate to newspapers as the news being reported is local, and hits home saying "this could happen in the local community/area". Trying to reach a personal level.
  • Speaking quite casually, not forceful. "You will get pre-approved in about an hour". Trying to be reassuring to the audience.
  • Gives details, like phone number and website at the end. This could help audiences remember the details, so its not too much information to take in at the beginning, with the distraction of the advert afterwards.
  • The caption for the company; "Lending done right" is featured at the very end. This makes Audiences associate the caption with the company, therefore it is the last thing they hear and will remember.
  • The length of time for the advert is 1:02 secs. I will look at the timing for my advert when I look at what I plan on saying for the advertisement. I have found out that this seems to be the average time for radio commercials.
  • This advertisement takes a different approach to the first advertisement I have looked at. The advert uses a scenario, where the characters are discussing the product being advertised.
  • The background this time is not of Music, but of a stereotypical office noise, eg. Phones ringing, people around/chatting. This gives the audience an idea of the kinda of environment they are in.
  • Noises to describe what is happening in the scene are used, for example, the lady running off, you hear heels running away.
  • Towards the end of the advertisement, a jingle for the company is used, again, so the audience remembers the jingle, remembering the company.
  • At the very end of the advert, the number of the company is stated so people can find the nearest to them.
  • Again, the advertisement is 1:02 secs.

  • This advertisement consists of a male representing the product, and then showing the 'opinions' of the 'audiences'
  • The background firstly is cheering, clapping, etc, and the opinions are said over it.
  • The voices of the people from Texas and China, for example, are showed in a stereotypical way, as a representation of the people from that part of the worlds. This for me helps, because if I used an opinion based advert like this one, I would use somebody from the Local area I write about to speak for it, so it is a representation of that area.
  • Eventually, the opinions of the people fade into a song in the background, whilst the male is talking, and giving details of the product, ableing the audience to remember the advert and what the man is talking about.
I think I have given good examples on the kind of advertisement I can produce. I will now look at different scripts for my newspaper.

Friday 25th February 2011: Next Task

My next task is to create an Radio Advertisement for my local newspaper. I will be looking at radio advertisements to see the Codes and Conventions, then I will be looking at how I can create my own using what I have learnt. I will script my advertisement, Finding somebody with a confident, clear voice, to use.

Monday 21st February 2011: Final Newspaper Poster Design

For my Poster design, I used the same fonts as I did in my Newspaper cover and article design, so it would be recognizable to the audience.

This was my first draft. As you can see, I have tried to keep the layout simple, as the posters I have looked at previously have a simple design. I didn't want it to be too complicated, as I want audiences to be able to quickly see and relate it to the newspaper "The Daily Journal". I wanted it to include information on the Newspaper and the latest Issue, therefore I used the bottom space to highlight the main stories of the newspaper.

When I completed this draft, I found that the font at the bottom was wrong. I also found that the red "This Week" doesn't fit in well with the rest of the page, therefore I decided to change it so the colour schemes fit, etc.

This is my final draft for the Poster design. As you can see I have made some changes from the previous draft. I have added in a shadow to highlight the local newspaper caption. I have also changed the fonts and colours around so it all fits in right, it still being kept simple, in-fitting with the codes and conventions, and the stereotypical look of newspaper posters.
This will be in A3 size.

Monday 14th February 2011: Layout Designs for Newspaper Posters

Layout Design Sketches For Newspaper Poster

Layout #1

This is a simple design, featuring the most recent headline (which is from my front page design) and the caption of the newspaper at the bottom, as well as the masthead. I want the font of the headline to be a different font from the masthead, so it stands out ,and I think the background of the caption writing should be in black, so the writing will stand out in white and be different to the rest of the writing.

Layout #2

This layout is more detailed than the previous. It gives more of an idea as to what is featured in the newspaper, with the caption, recent heading, and price. I will again, use different fonts for each section. The fonts will be the same fonts that I have included in my article and masthead, so they are recognizable to readers/audiences.

Layout #3

This is a simple design, stating the most recent headline of the newspaper, the name, and the newspaper caption. It doesnt give as much detail as the previous layouts, but it is simple for audience to see quickly, possibly in passing, and know that it is the Daily Journal Newspaper.

I have decided to go with layout #2. It gives more detail of the newspaper, like the price, etc and still manages to give the headline and the caption, which will make audience's associate this with the newspaper. The poster will be in A3 Size.

Sunday 13th February 2011: Poster Research/Codes & Conventions

My second task was to create a poster advertising my local newspaper. Here I have a few pictures of newspaper posters, which I will look at to see what the Codes & Conventions are, ready to design my own:

This poster is for a local newspaper, the "Crowthorne". As you can see, they have included the logo/masthead of the newspaper at the top, so it is recognizable to their audience. They have also included a web address beneath their caption. Beneath the masthead, they have their main headline to what could be their front page news on the actual newspaper. Beneath that, they have included a small picture of what the top of
the newspaper looks like, and a banner, with writing on, stating what they're
newspaper provides. Lastly, the date of the poster is stated at the bottom, as well as their price, and newspaper again.

This newspaper poster is alot simpler than the previous. By the looks of it, this newspaper could be more widely distributed than the previous one I have looked at. The story is more of a worldwide story, and the name of the newspaper isn't
representative to one place. It features the headline at the top, then the masthead/name of the newspaper at the bottom. This again could be because the newspaper is widely know, not much information is needed to be given.

I want to include the elements of both of these newspaper posters in my own design. I plan on drawing out different layout designs, then choosing which I think is the strongest.

Development of my Newspaper 2nd page

[Adding in headline]

[First picture added in, then sub headline]

[Second picture added in, deciding on layout]

[Change In Layout, swapping around the order of the photograph and story]

[Layout decided, byline added in before article]

[Wrote in the article, changing different fonts to fit the article and adding in a local business advertisement at the bottom. I thought it was best to advertise a local business rather than a National. It enhances the 'localization' of the newspaper]

Tuesday 21st February 2011: Layout Sketches for Second Page

These are the layout mock-ups for my second page (which will be an article). I have taken different elements of the articles I have looked at previously and included them in these sketches.

Layout #1

Layout #2

Layout #3
I have decided to go with Layout #2 as I think it gives more detail into my story. It features two opictures which makes my range of pictures used open up, and it also includes an advertisment, which I will feature a local Business in, emphasizing on the Local Genre.

Wednesday 5th January 2011: First Draft of Newspaper/Changes

Here is the first draft of the newspaper cover. I have highlighted in Red the areas I want to change, and listed below...

First Red circle shows where I need to feature a picture for the Sports section of the Newspaper

  • Second circle shows gap which needs to be filled. I plan on editing the Picture to move into the gap.

The third square shows where I need to move the Byline and photo (which needs putting in) up to.

The circle around the front shows I need to make the writing possibly one size bigger so there isnt a sudden change of size in the writing, from the headline to the story.
